Hiroto originally existed as an umbrella. His owner didn't have a family of his own and spent his time traveling between villages as a messenger, guide, or simply for the experience of it. And on every journey he would carry his umbrella with him whether it was raining or not. But his owner eventually became ill and died. The umbrella was left alone in a small shed for 100 years before transforming into a karakase-obake (umbrella demon). 

As a yokai, Hiroto picked up what his owner had originally done by guiding travelers across mountains. His clients range between both yokai and humans, but he normally doesn't take much preference for one over the other. He charges relatively little in terms of price but asks that they take care of both party's meals. Hiroto understands that most think little of guides but loves it too much to give up. Being able to hear others' stories and learn little bits about strangers he barely knows always makes him look forward to another outing.

He's spent many years performing this same task. So many, in fact, that he has lost count. When he does get bored, he tends to walk around various villages without any particular goal in mind. Other times, he purposefully try to spook people by either sneaking up behind him, or showing his yokai form briefly to humans and then running off, waiting for them to freak out. Right now though, he hopes to find another person like his owner to be his companion again.

•Humans can see him. He sometimes wears a mask to differentiate himself from humans since his humanoid form lacks most yokai features and he dislikes using his full yokai form.
•His tongue resembles that of a snake's. When in front of humans, he tends to try to hide it.
•He's rarely initiates fights, but if need be, he can defend himself my smacking others with his umbrella or with his fists. He can also temporarily blind/stun others by suddenly flashing bright light from his umbrella.
•He's a mediocre cook at best. That's why he normally takes advantage of chances to get free meals.
•He can fall asleep anywhere.
•Doesn't feel bad when he spooks people. #noregrets
